Check what applies to your assigned day, write down questions as they arise, and keep the details of your clinical experience within the rules your school and facility provide.
Before clinical
Prepare the learning plan
- Review the instructor’s current objectives, assignment details, and required preparation.
- Confirm the start time, meeting point, dress expectations, required documents, and permitted materials through your school or facility instructions.
- Pack only the school-approved items you need, then leave yourself a calm arrival buffer.
- Choose one or two learning intentions you can discuss with your instructor or supervisor.
Organize
Keep questions and materials together
- Bring your course-approved note format and a pen or other permitted way to capture learning points.
- List questions from assigned reading, skills practice, or previous feedback to ask at the appropriate time.
- Write down which course resources you want to revisit after clinical, rather than relying on memory alone.
- If your course includes dosage practice, keep it clearly labeled as study practice only—not for patient-care decisions.
During clinical
Notice how the day is organized
- Observe communication, prioritization, safety routines, and documentation habits within the scope of what your instructor or supervisor asks you to notice.
- Capture de-identified learning notes only when and how your school and facility policies allow.
- Mark unfamiliar terms, processes, or rationale as questions to review later with the appropriate instructor or supervisor.
- Pause and ask for direction whenever you are unsure; supervision and facility expectations lead the day.
After clinical
Reflect, follow up, and reset
- Write one thing you observed, one concept you want to clarify, and one small strength you practiced today.
- Compare your notes with your assigned materials before your next class or clinical day.
- List follow-up questions for your instructor, supervisor, or scheduled debrief—not for independent patient-care decisions.
- Choose one realistic next study step, then give yourself credit for showing up and learning.
